A Little History
NC Farm Living at its Best
The Great Smoky Mountains cover a lot of area. Many back roads take you up and down small valleys flowing with mountain streams. Artisans Millie Ann & Myron Higdon live in such a valley surrounded by the lush green mountains of Western, NC, one of the many scenic areas in the Great Smoky Mountains. The small farm they live on has been in Myron's family for over 75 years and living on a farm allows them to always have a vegetable garden. That is where their (BURLIN) baskets, proudly named after Millie's father comes in handy.
Our Beginning...
Millie Ann & Myron first started their small business, appropriately named Inspirations From Nature, through local sales of their handmade garden baskets, often referred to as a garden hod. One particular item, the BURLIN basket, is truly unique and started it all. You see the BURLIN, respectfully named after Millie’s father, is a fruit & vegetable garden harvesting basket that was originally handcrafted using the family's old tobacco sticks that had been stored in Burlin's barn for decades.

Since then, all of the tobacco sticks have been used up and repurposed as handles for the baskets. The handles are now made using reclaimed wooden sticks from their farm which includes several acres of woodlands where they can source from fallen tree limbs, downed trees, and under brushed areas.
